Owner and Manager – Mike Fleming
Mike Fleming is extremely proud to bring to you BHIMA. He is one of the most experienced and knowledgeable Managers in the Thoroughbred Breeding Industry and is very excited to be able to offer you and your bloodstock the opportunity to have his expertise and passion working for you.
Having grown up in Christchurch, New Zealand and living in close proximity to the Riccarton Race Course, it was inevitable that Mike would be involved in the Thoroughbred Industry. His father has a passion for horses which fuelled Mike’s interest and love of the beautiful and powerful Thoroughbred horse.
In his early years, Mike worked for various trainers in the South Island of New Zealand and even tried his hand at being a Jockey, being quite successful and riding a number of winners. But Mike’s passion was with the Breeding and so he moved to a stud in Matamata in the Heart of the Waikato, surrounded by the best studs in New Zealand. When Mike was 21, he was offered a position at a Japanese Stable, where he lived and worked for 12 months.
Upon returning to New Zealand he resumed working for and learning from Norm Hawthorn at Paramount Lodge for approx 3 years before making the move to Highview Stud under the tuition of Brent Gillovic. In 2000, Mike took up the Dry Mare Manager role.
After 3 valuable years here, it was with much enthusiasm he re-located to the Hunter Valley to Manage Brooklyn Lodge. After 7 years living and working in the Hunter Valley, Mike found the timing was right to make the move to his own farm. So, on the 15th April 2011, BHIMA was founded.
Partner and Office Administrator – Kate Fleming
Kate grew up in Sunny Queensland surrounded by horses, riding and competing in the Equestrian circle. She completed a Diploma of Applied Science – Equine Studies at Gatton College before heading to the USA to groom for an International Event rider. On returning to Australia, she found her passion for the Thoroughbred racehorse, when she worked at a pre-training centre in NSW.
In 2001 she moved to Cambridge Stud in New Zealand to learn about the Breeding Industry. Moving to the Hunter Valley with Mike in 2004, she took a few years off to start her family. She is now very excited to be sharing BHIMA with Mike and divides her time between the office and the farm.
Our permanent staff have a wealth of knowledge between them, with experience in countries such as, Ireland, USA, New Zealand and Australia. They are a valuable part of the BHIMA Team, are passionate about horses and have a dedication to be desired.
